I get a lot of emails from people about modifying their ECUs so they can be remapped. The '..Hey would you modify my ecu for me if I paid you?" emails out number the "...hey I'm going to modify my own ecu can you give me some help.." emails 10 to 1. I didn't start out this project to make money...

What is the Best Kawasaki Ninja for an Amateur Biker?
(Preview)
I'm looking at getting an edition of Kawasaki's Ninja motorcycle line from the years 2013-2015. I was curious as to which bike category, and bike specifically, would be good to learn on for a first bike? My Dad informed me that a Kawasaki Ninja would be a good bike to start on (he's had 7 bikes over the yea...

ZX-12R 16bit ECU tools

Hi guys, I've ported a version of the GSXR 16bit checksum utility to the ZX-12R. This is a good tool for ensuring that the code section of your binary isn't being corrupted by an xml error or editor software bug. You can find a copy of the program and instructions here: https://sites.google.com/...

Background - The project so far
(Preview)
In this thread I will cover the progress so far. For the sake of brevity I will leave out some of the false turns and dead ends along the way and basically summarize what we have found so far. It may take a couple days to get caught up. The ECU studied in this project is out of a 2002 Kawasaki ZX-1200B1/B2. The...

"GenII" ZX-12 ECU
(Preview)
I finally got around to opening up the ECU I got off of eBay (Kawi Part# 21175-0038). As I suspected it is a first generation 32bit with a 7052 cpu. What that means is that it is the same type as the 02-07 Hayabusa. It can be flashed through the wire harness connectors. You do not need to cut any holes in the EC...

Warning on notching 2000 model A1 ECUs
(Preview)
In order to download and/or reprogram the map of a ZX-12 ECU you will need to 'notch' the back of the ECU in order to expose the BDM connector CN3 on the back of the board. After doing a couple of these I went to notch a 2000 model A1 ECU and got a nasty suprise. The A1 circuit board completley fills the case and...

A/B Map feature

One thing we've found is that the ECU has two complete sets of maps that are jumper selectable. Today I verified the A/B map feature works. I flashed a zero map into the cylinder 1, A fuel map of a 21175-1065 ECU. This is a UK A1 model. I hooked it up to my bike emulator that allows me to bench run the ECUs. With...

Reflashing an ECU while still in its case....
(Preview)
Up till now all the work on the ecu has been done from a board that was removed from its case. While this has worked out really well for reverse engineering the ECU it is not a practical approach as it renders the ECU unusable on a bike. The next step is to see if I can successfully reflash the ECU and still hav...

I've been neglecting this site and haven't really been keeping it up to date as much as I should.
